Darrell W. Heiliger, 87, of Millersburg, and a long time resident of Dalmatia RD, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013 at his home in Millersburg, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Parkinson's. He was born in Holyoke, CO, on December 17, 1925, a son of the late Ida (Bockholdt) Heiliger and the late George Heiliger. In 1969 he married Regina Lenker. Darrell was employed as a Marine Superintendent for Pentzien Engineering and Contracting Corp, retiring after 25 years. Raised a farmer, he joined the Army in 1945 after graduating high school. He attended the University of Nebraska for two years, and was recalled to serve in the Korean War in 1950. A veteran of WWII, he graduated from the Engineer School at Belvoir, Virginia, before going to Korea. Served seven months in a combat infantry company, where he became 1st Sgt, and earned two Bronze Star Medals, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of VFW and American Legion, also a member of the VFW Post 5750 Rifle Club. A life member of the 9th Infantry Regiment Association, and the 2nd Infantry Division Association, Korean War Veterans Association of PA, Mason Lodge #702, Herndon, and Harrisburg Consistory. A member of St Paul's Lutheran Church, Millersburg, and associate member of the County Line Methodist Church, Dalmatia. He was an active member in the Mahanoy and Mahantango Historical Society, serving as president in 2000. Darrell's hobbies included hunting, photography, traveling and gardening, and has written narratives of his service in the Philippines and Korea. Darrell is survived by his loving spouse Regina Heiliger; two sons, Wayne Heiliger and Ward Heiliger both of Omaha, Nebraska; one daughter, Annette Bixler of Dalmatia; one sister, Phyllis Krueger of Lincoln, Nebraska; and one brother-in-law, Arlo Lenker of Herndon. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, six nephews, four nieces, four great nephews, and four great nieces. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Heiliger, one grandson, and a brother, Virgil Heiliger. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Central PA Hospice, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17101 A Viewing will be held Friday August 23, 2013 at the James A. Reed Funeral Home, Pillow, from 7:00PM to 9:00PM and also on Saturday August 24, 2013 at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Millersburg, from 11:00AM to 12:00 Noon. Funeral Ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at 12:00 Noon at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Millersburg, with Rev. Mark Hoffman officiating. Also, a Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at 10:30 AM at County Line United Methodist Church, Dalmatia.
