William C. Mattern

William C. Mattern, 77 of Loyalton, passed away on August 13, 2026 at the Penn Medicine Hospital in Philadelphia. He was born on November 3, 1948 the son of the late Woodrow and Merle (Ferster) Mattern. Bill was self employed most of his life except for the last 10 years when he worked at Koppy's Propane as a truck driver. After being given a second chance at life through a double lung transplant in 2014, he spent the next 12 years making the most of every day. He never took that second chance for granted. He lived with an adventurous spirit, a love for people, and a genuine appreciation for the many experiences life had to offer. He had a passion for cars, tractors, tractor pulls, motorcycles, boating, snowmobiling, ATV riding, dancing, and just about any social activity where good people, good times, and good stories could be found. He was rarely one to sit still and was always heading to some kind of event or gathering. He seemed to know everyone-and if he didn't, he probably knew someone who did. He always knew what was happening around town and somehow managed to stay up to date on all the local happenings. His outgoing personality and ability to make friends wherever he went will be remembered by many. He was a true snowbird, spending his winters in Florida and returning home to Pennsylvania each summer. Florida became a special part of his life, filled with sunshine, adventures, great friends at Camp Inn, and countless memories. Family was at the center of his heart. He was married to his beloved wife, Ellen, for 54 years. When Ellen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and faced some of the most difficult years of her life, he remained devoted to her. He cared for her with unwavering love, patience, and dedication until her passing. Their 54 years together were a testament to the meaning of commitment and love. After Ellen's passing, he was blessed to find companionship and love again with Sherry, who stood faithfully by his side until his last breath. Their time together brought him happiness, laughter, companionship, and new memories. He was grateful to have shared his final winter in Florida and final summer in Pennsylvania with her. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving daughter, Kristie (Andy) Ney; grandchildren, Kayleigh (Zach) Miller and Mac (Whitni) Ney; great-grandchildren, Raelynn and Rhys Ney; and two special babies he was eagerly looking forward to meeting. He is also survived by his companion, Sherry; his sister, Carol (Dale) Hassinger; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends who shared his love of cars, tractors, motorcycles, outdoor adventures, dancing, and simply enjoying life. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ellen Mattern, and his son, Andrew "Andy" Mattern and parents Woodrow and Merle Mattern. He leaves behind far more than memories. He leaves behind stories, laughter, friendships, adventures, and the lasting reminder that life is meant to be lived. After receiving his second chance in 2014, he made sure to fill those years with everything he loved-family, friends, travel, adventure, and plenty of good times. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him, but his stories will continue to be told, his adventures remembered, and his unmistakable presence felt wherever people gather to share a good story, a good laugh, or a little bit of hometown chatter. He lived life his way, loved his people fiercely, and made the most of every precious day he was given. A celebration of life party will be held on September 12, 2026 at the Short Mountain Gun Club in Loyalton, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Clyde F.
